Billions of dollars are being spent building data centres for today’s AI demand while the technology itself continues to change at an extraordinary pace. How AI is processed, the hardware it needs and where that processing takes place are already changing. [1] [2] A data centre could remain on this landscape for decades. There is no guarantee the technology it is being built around will.

AI Is Already Moving Onto Personal Devices

NVIDIA now sells the DGX Spark, a desktop AI computer capable of running large AI models locally rather than relying entirely on remote computing infrastructure. [1] Apple is putting AI processing directly onto iPhones, iPads and Macs, with more demanding requests using larger server-based systems when needed. [2] AI computing is no longer happening in one place. Companies are developing ways to process it in massive data centres, on desktops and directly on the devices people carry every day.

What Will AI Need 10 or 20 Years From Now?

Today’s data centres are being designed around today’s chips, cooling systems, power requirements and demand. AI models are becoming more efficient, new processors are being developed and more computing is moving onto local devices.Nobody knows what the industry will require decades from now. Yet the infrastructure being proposed today could still be sitting here.
